A Carnival Worker Kills Several Fish, Then Broke Windows Behind The Western Park

8/20/24

| Vernal, Ut. | August 16th, 2024 |

Vernal Police responded to the Western Park to a disorderly call where the complainant told dispatch that an intoxicated female carnival worker was breaking the windows of a trailer.

Officer Candelas arrived on scene first and found 24-year-old Shannia Shonie from Arizona, holding a three-foot metal rod above her head as if she were going to swing it. Officer Candelas and other officers were able to get her to drop the rod and place her in handcuffs.

Shannia continued to yell obscenities, so she was quickly transported to the Uintah County Jail by Sergeant Roth.

Cpl. Young spoke with the complainant, who showed the officer the damage to his trailer. A window had been broken out with a metal rod. The front panel of the trailer was also damaged, a generator had been flipped upside down, a panel on the side of the trailer had been ripped off, and wires were hanging out of the broken panel. Several witnesses witnessed the damage.

Witnesses also stated that Shannia had taken automotive paint stripping liquid and poured it into the fish container, which contained about 500 live fish for the carnival games. The fish had already begun to die, and the workers attempted to move as many fish as they could into other containers, but they were already starting to die in the other containers as well.

The complainant stated that when he arrived, he tried to stop Shannia by calling dispatch. Shannia tried to take the cell phone out of his hands and told him that she wouldn't let him call the police on her. The complainant began recording Shannia after he called dispatch.

In the camera footage, Cpl. Young saw Shannia tell the complainant that she would do something to get charged and then pick up the metal rod. She swung the rod at the complainant, who was able to step backward to avoid being struck. Officers arrived on the scene, and he ended the video.

At the jail, Cpl. Young advised Shannia of her Miranda Rights. She admitted to drinking about four shots of Tequila and causing the damage to the trailer. She also admitted to pouring "something" into the fish container and holding the metal rod in her hands while speaking with the complainant.

Based on the affirmation of Cpl. Young, the arresting officer, the undersigned magistrate finds that probable cause existed for the arrest without a warrant of Shannia Shonie. Shannia Shonie may post bail in the amount of $3,500.00.
