On February 28th, at approximately 7:00 pm, Deputy Mieure was called to a domestic disturbance involving a firearm.
According to dispatch, the complainant reported that 70-year-old Susan Lee Carraway was involved in an altercation where she had pointed a firearm at family members. The complainant also stated that Susan had assaulted her husband, causing injuries to his face.
It was unknown if the injuries were caused by the firearm or another form of assault.
Dispatch further advised that Susan was suspected to still be in possession of the firearm and had barricaded herself inside a camp trailer on the property.
Officers arrived at the residence, surrounded the camp trailer, and used their PA system to call for Susan to exit with her hands up. After several attempts, Susan came out of the trailer, complied with commands to keep her hands up, walked backward toward officers, and was detained without incident.
Susan was detained and advised of her Miranda rights, which she stated she understood.
Susan stated that she and her husband had a verbal altercation about tenants on the property that she wanted evicted. Susan reported that one of the tenants came into the camp trailer and had coffee with her and her husband as they discussed property matters.
Susan said she was upset the tenants were still on the property and that her husband refused to make them leave. According to Susan, a verbal altercation ensued inside the camp trailer.
Afterward, all parties except Susan left the camp trailer and went into the house on the property. Susan stated she then obtained a firearm from the camp trailer and held it alongside her leg as she walked from the camp trailer to the house.
Upon realizing family members were inside the house, Susan claimed she backed out without pointing the gun at anyone. Susan then returned to the camp trailer, where she barricaded herself until police arrived. Susan maintained planning to leave the property and stay with a friend. She also claimed her husband physically confronted her as she tried to collect her belongings, and they got into an altercation as she attempted to get away.
Susan's husband was interviewed. He stated that Susan was upset that the tenant was still on the property and demanded that he kick them out. He stated that he refused to satisfy Susan's requests, and Susan knocked him down while they were in the camp trailer and kicked him multiple times in the face.
Susan's husband sustained lacerations to his nose and right eye area of his face. His injuries were treated on scene by ambulance personnel.
Susan's husband stated that while he was inside the house, Susan entered the house with one of the complainant's handguns and pointed the gun at the three tenants as well as at him. Susan's husband stated that he attempted to disarm Susan but failed, and she retreated to the camper.
Deputy Mieure interviewed one of the tenants. He stated he went into the camper to discuss the daily chores. As they spoke, the tenant stated Susan repeatedly interrupted and demanded he leave the property. Once Susan began arguing with her husband, the tenant exited the camp trailer. He said that after leaving the camp trailer, Susan came out with a firearm and pointed it at him while demanding he leave the property.
The tenant said Susan pointed the gun directly at him as well as his spouse and juvenile son, who was also inside the house. As Susan continued yelling and pointing the gun, her husband tried to disarm her.
The tenant stated that Susan had left the house and returned to barricade herself inside the camp trailer, at which point the complainant called the police.
The tenant described the firearm as a semi-automatic handgun, possibly a .380 or 9mm handgun. A warrant was requested/approved, and the firearm was collected as evidence.
Susan was placed under arrest and booked into Uintah County Jail for aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, Domestic related assault charges, and aggravated child abuse.
Deputy Mieure requested that Susan be held without bail due to the fact that she retrieved a loaded firearm and pointed it at individuals after provoking verbal arguments with her husband and tenants.
Susan's husband stated that he had been married to Susan for 40 years, and she assaulted him on a weekly basis, and that this was the first time that she had pointed a gun at him or others, and he was concerned for his welfare.
